Quick TakeThe easiest way to raise AOV is to sell the combos customers already buy together.
Pair products that complete each other, add a mini at full price instead of discounting, and save BYOB or tiered discounts for when your margin allows.

Getting a new visitor to your store keeps getting more expensive. The cheaper win is getting the customers you already have to add one more product to the cart. That is what AOV (average order value) optimisation is about. Product bundles are one of the simplest ways to do it, and you do not need a big discount.

Here are seven practical ways to increase AOV with product bundles, starting with the ones that protect your margin.

1. Start with what customers already buy together

List the combos people want to buy, not the ones you want to sell. Your order history already shows them. Pull an order export with the month, order name and SKU, then count how often each pair or trio of SKUs lands in the same order.

The free Product Combination Analyzer on this page does this for you. Upload your export and it shows your top 2, 3 and 4 SKU combinations month by month, with an Excel download.

Pro tip: Start with pairs that already sell well without any offer. Those are your safest bundles.

2. Pair products that complete each other

The best combos solve one need together: shampoo with conditioner, a razor with blades, a face wash with a moisturiser. Customers see the logic straight away, so these pairs sell even when both products cost the same.

3. Try one full size plus one mini, instead of a discount

A full-size product with a smaller add-on often sells better than two full sizes. For example, shampoo at ₹699 plus a conditioner mini at ₹199. The cart moves from ₹699 to ₹898, and nothing is discounted.

  • The customer gets a low-risk way to try a second product.
  • Your COGS stays healthy, because every item sells at its own price.
  • A customer who likes the mini comes back for the full size, so it also drives repeat orders.

4. Keep the price ratio right

The add-on should never cost more than the main product. If your primary product is ₹699, keep the secondary below that. A useful rule of thumb: add-ons priced at about 20 to 40% of the main product feel like an easy yes.

Also work back from your current AOV. If it sits at ₹799, a cart that lands near ₹999 is a realistic stretch. Set your free-shipping threshold just above your current AOV, so the add-on also unlocks a reward.

5. Offer add-ons and swaps right in the cart

Quick commerce apps like Blinkit show small add-ons in the cart, one tap away. Do the same on your store: let shoppers add the mini, or swap a single product for the combo, without leaving the cart. Keep it to two or three suggestions based on what is already in the cart.

A bundle can only lift AOV if shoppers make it to the cart. If your product page or checkout loses people first, start with these eCommerce conversion rate tips.

6. If you discount, use BYOB or tiered offers with care

There will be times you run discounts. Two formats work well for AOV:

  • BYOB (Build Your Own Bundle): customers pick any 3 or 4 products for a set price.
  • Tiered discounts: for example, 2 products at 10% off, 3 at 15% and 4 at 20%. A progress bar in the cart shows how close shoppers are to the next level.

The catch is margin. Deep discounts push up your COGS-to-NET ratio, so every extra unit earns less. Cap the top tier, keep hero SKUs out of the deepest level, and check contribution margin per order before you scale an offer.

7. Track the numbers that matter

AOV alone can mislead. Watch these together:

  • AOV and units per order
  • Attach rate: the share of orders that include the add-on
  • Contribution margin per order, after discounts and shipping
  • Repeat rate of customers who bought a mini, using a customer cohort analysis

Test each combo against your normal product page for a few weeks, then keep the winners.

Product bundle checklist to increase AOV

  • Export the last 3 to 6 months of orders and run them through the Product Combination Analyzer.
  • Pick your top 3 natural pairs.
  • Launch one full size + mini combo at full price.
  • Keep every add-on priced below the main product.
  • Add one-tap add-ons or swaps in the cart.
  • Use BYOB or tiered offers only with a margin floor.
  • Track AOV, attach rate and margin per order for 30 days.
