Learn how cohort analysis helps you track repeat purchases, measure discount impact, and understand the long-term health of your acquired customers.

Cohort analysis is one of the most useful ways to understand the health of your acquired customers. Instead of looking only at total revenue or repeat purchase rates, it helps you track customers based on when they first purchased from your business. This reveals when customers return, how promotions affect their behaviour, and whether your product creates long-term loyalty. If you are not sure how this differs from your repeat purchase rate, read returning customer rate vs cohort analysis.
What is customer cohort analysis?
Customer cohort analysis tracks groups of customers over time. A customer cohort is a group of customers who share a common characteristic, usually the month of their first purchase. For example, all customers who made their first purchase in January 2026 belong to the January cohort.
You can then track how many of these customers purchase again in February, March, April, and the following months.
How Does Cohort Analysis Work?
Imagine you ran a major sale in February and another promotion in April. Your cohort report can help you identify whether customers acquired during these periods returned for repeat purchases.
- Green cells: In a typical cohort heatmap, greener cells represent higher repeat purchase or retention rates, depending on the report's settings.
- Higher repeat rates: These indicate that a larger share of the original customer group returned to purchase again.
- Flat or low repeat rates: These may indicate weak repeat behaviour or limited changes over time, depending on the metric being measured.
What Does Your Cohort Tell You About Discounts?
If customers acquired during a sale return mainly when another discount is available, your business may be relying heavily on promotions to drive repeat purchases.
On the other hand, if customers continue purchasing even without frequent discounts, it may indicate stronger product preference and customer loyalty. A relatively flat cohort pattern can also be healthy if repeat rates remain consistently strong.
Pro Tip: Compare cohorts acquired during promotional periods with those acquired during regular periods. Track repeat purchase rate, time to second order, average order value, and discount usage to understand what is driving retention.
Final Thoughts
Cohort analysis helps you move beyond acquisition numbers and understand what happens after the first purchase. Start by comparing your last three to six monthly cohorts and identify when customers return, whether promotions influence their behaviour, and how retention changes over time.
