Numbers to track
| Metric | Formula |
|---|---|
| Cart-to-checkout rate | Checkouts started ÷ carts created × 100 |
| Checkout completion rate | Orders ÷ checkouts started × 100 |
| Conversion rate | Orders ÷ sessions × 100 |
| Amount payable | Cart subtotal − discount + shipping (+ COD fee, if any) |
| Free-shipping gap | Free-shipping threshold − cart subtotal |
Worked example
- 400 checkouts started, 280 orders: 280 ÷ 400 × 100 = 70% completion
- Free shipping above ₹999, cart ₹749: 999 − 749 = ₹250 gap
- Shipping ₹60, no discount: 749 − 0 + 60 = ₹809 payable
Illustrative example, not real data.
1. Keep offers out of checkout
Checkout is the last step. Let the customer pay.
- Do: show offers on the product page and in the cart.
- Avoid: banners, upsells and "add this too" pop-ups at payment. They give shoppers a reason to pause.
2. Autofill details, add no extra forms
Every extra field is another exit.
- Turn on address autocomplete and saved customer details, where your setup allows.
- Ask only for what you need to deliver the order.
- Skip optional fields, such as a second address line or a company name, unless you need them.
3. Be transparent from the cart
No charge should appear for the first time at the last step. If shipping is added at checkout, say so in the cart, with the rule and the amount.
- Example message: "Add ₹250 more for free shipping. Otherwise ₹60 shipping applies at checkout."
- Show the free-shipping gap using the formula above.
- Also show any COD fee in the cart.

4. Apply coupons in the cart only
If a code fails, or the cart is short of the minimum, the shopper can fix it right there: add a product or try another code. They see exactly what they will pay before they start checkout.
- Put the coupon box in the cart, with a clear message when a code fails.
- Where your setup allows, keep the coupon field out of checkout.
- Show the new total after the code is applied.
5. Keep both COD and online payment
Shoppers pay the way they trust. Offer UPI, cards and wallets, and COD where your margins allow.
- Put the most-used method first, usually UPI.
- Confirm COD orders after purchase, because failed deliveries cost you money. Check the cost with the RTO Cost Calculator.

6. Offer guest checkout and express pay
Forcing an account before payment loses first-time buyers.
- Let shoppers check out as a guest.
- Enable express payment options your customers already use.
- Offer account creation after the order, not before it.
7. Add quiet reassurance at the pay button
Doubt peaks at payment. Answer it without adding noise.
- Show the expected delivery date.
- Link your return policy near the pay button.
- Show a real support number or chat option.
Pro Tip: Place a test order on your phone with a slow connection. Count the taps from cart to payment, and remove any step that does not help delivery or payment.
